WC2EM Warren County RACES and

Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services and Amateur Radio Emergency Services Team

¹ http://www.skywarn.org

SKYWARN™ is a concept developed in the early 1970s that was intended to promote a cooperative effort between the National Weather Service and communities. The emphasis of the effort is often focused on the storm spotter, an individual who takes a position near their community and reports wind gusts, hail size, rainfall, and cloud formations that could signal a developing tornado.

Reportable Severe Weather Parameters (for Warren County NJ)

Join the Warren County Skywarn Yahoo Group: Sussex-Warren Skywarn NWS warnings

During Spotter Activation: The Warren County Skywarn Coordinator/or a representative will open a net on 146.820 (-600 HZ) PL 110.9. Net Control can receive all the local reports and relay them to the NWS Mt. Holly office. Reports can be made directly by calling 1-800-523-4129.

Skywarn Reporting from Joe Miketta of the (NWS) National Weather Service Mt. Holly Office modified for Warren County by John Burricelli.

1.) If a spotter sights a tornado or funnel cloud, the proper reporting is to contact the NWS directly and immediately via the 800 number: 1-800-523-4129

ALL other reports should make their way to the NWS in Mount Holly NJ via the following routes:

2) If a Skywarn Net is operating in or near the county where the weather event occurred, and if you are an amateur radio operator, the proper reporting procedure is to contact the Net with your report. Net Control will then get the report to the NWS.

Note: During working hours, there will probably not be a net active. You can try Hunterdon County, or call the coordinator directly.

3) If you a NOT an amateur radio operator, contact the County Skywarn Coordinator by phone if you have his/her phone number. If you don’t have his/her phone number, try contacting the County Skywarn Coordinator by email BEFORE severe weather is expected to see if you can get the number.

County Skywarn Coordinator email addresses are available on the Skywarn homepage at: www.erh.noaa.gov/er/phi/skywarn/coords.html.

Note: I will be making announcements via the Warren County Skywarn E Group list prior to severe weather coming into our area.

4) If the County Skywarn Coordinator is not available, or if you don’t have his/her phone number, please contact the NWS directly with your report via the 800 number.
